I’d be pretty worried too if a car started shifting that badly and multiple shops were already talking about a full rebuild. It’s a good reminder that getting a proper diagnosis first can save a lot of money, since something like old fluid and a clogged filter can cause some surprisingly bad shifting symptoms.
