Finding the right balance with ddos protection is tricky because you do not want to block legitimate users by mistake. We had a provider that was too aggressive, but our current setup uses machine learning to tell real traffic from botnets. It took some tweaking, but now our API stays online even when competitors try to flood us. Just make sure to test it thoroughly first.
