My bathroom feels like it’s from a different era and not in a good way

I’ve been living in my current house for about six years now, and I’ve slowly renovated almost every room except the main bathroom, which I’ve been avoiding because I know it’s going to be a huge project. But I honestly can’t put it off any longer, the peach-colored tiles are absolutely hideous, the grout is so stained that no amount of scrubbing makes a difference, and the vanity is this weird yellowed wood that looks like it belongs in a motel from the 1970s. Every time I have guests over, I feel embarrassed when they have to use it, and I find myself apologizing for it constantly. I’ve been dreaming about what I’d do with the space if I had a blank canvas, something bright and clean with modern fixtures and proper storage, but I have no idea where to even start with making that happen. I’ve been looking at photos online and saving ideas for tile layouts and vanity styles, but I’m overwhelmed by all the choices and I don’t trust myself to make good decisions without some professional guidance. I think I need to find someone who really understands bathroom remodeling in Los Altos and can help me figure out what’s realistic for my space and my budget. I’m not looking for anything ultra-luxurious, just something that feels fresh, functional, and doesn’t make me cringe every time I walk in. Has anyone here done a full bathroom renovation recently and can share what the process was like? How did you choose your contractor and what were the unexpected costs that came up? I’m trying to prepare myself both financially and mentally for what’s ahead.
