Women may have less sex as they age, but it’s not necessarily because they’ve lost interest in getting it on, according to a study published recently in the journal Menopause. Lots of them are just worried it will hurt. The study focused on a condition called genitourinary syndrome — a blanket term for the various bladder and vaginal problems that affect menopausal women. A survey of more than 1,500 women, ages 55 and up, found that 45 percent of postmenopausal females “usually” or “always” feel pain or discomfort while having sex, and fear of that pain can lead them to avoid sex. Other issues menopausal women commonly face include thinning of the vaginal walls (which can cause pain), bladder troubles, dryness and lack of an interested partner. While painful sex has been on doctors’ radars for years, genitourinary syndrome isn’t as well-known as other painful sex causes, such as vaginismus, which is a condition in which vaginal muscles tighten uncomfortably during sex. Researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research say their findings drill home the need for health care providers to have more honest, open conversations with their older female patients, to better explore possible treatments.
